Thoracoscopy

A thoracoscopic procedure allows a clinician to view the area inside the chest that is not the lungs. A thoracoscope, a short, flexible tube with a light and a tiny camera on the end, is used for this. The tube is inserted through a small cut made between the ribs, close to the lower end of the shoulder blade. VATS, short for video assisted thoracic surgery, procedures occasionally include thoracoscopy. A chest x-ray or CT scan can be utilized to look at an abnormal area that was detected during a thoracoscopy. The chest wall, lymph nodes, aberrant lung tissue, and the lining of the lung (pleura) can all be sampled using this method. People with lung cancer and mesothelioma frequently use it. Thoracoscopy may occasionally be used to treat minor lung malignancies by removing only the wedge-shaped portion of the lung (wedge resection) or, in cases when the tumor is larger, the entire lung lobe (lobectomy). In some circumstances, it may also be used to treat esophageal or thymus gland cancer.
